From Hobart: Mount Wellington Morning Walking Half-Day Tour

Set out on a half-day Mount Wellington tour experience where you really get to see the mountain, understand its history, plants, and geology, and hear its amazing stories. Walking 90 minutes and getting close to nature as well as seeing the views from the top.  You will be looked after by your local tour guide David, who is seasoned in local knowledge and can make the place come alive with stories.

9 am, meet at the Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre (20 Davey Street). Take a scenic drive through historic Hobart, the leafy town of Fern Tree, and up through the refreshing forests of Mt Wellington to The Springs. Here we can purchase a hot drink halfway up the mountain at the Lost Freight Cafe and gaze up at the spectacular cliffs and summit of Mt Wellington.

Then we drive up through the tree line to the chalet, a stone hut 1000m above sea level, and commence walking the easily graded Organ Pipes Track. Here we experience colourful snow gums, towering dolerite cliffs, and boulder fields along with stunning views of Hobart and its surroundings.

Furthermore, David, your guide will bring the place to life with his university-level knowledge of botany and geology, and his family connections to the pioneer hikers and their first-hand stories.

We then ascend through increasingly good views of Hobart to the summit of Mt Wellington. Up here the views only get better, now including some of the mountains of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. We get to take a short walk to the trig point achieving our arrival at the highest point and pausing to take in the breathtaking vista. David will remember the first time he walked from the city all the way up here when he was 18 years old, it took him 5 hours.

Then we get free time to check out the views and take photos from the Hobart and Southwest Wilderness viewing platforms. Up close we observe unique Tasmanian alpine vegetation and pillars of rock.  At the summit, you will be filled with astonishment, to be launched forth into a realm of natural goodness where you can see no limits.

We return to the Tasmanian Travel Information Centre with further views and forest scenery on the way down the mountain. We arrive at 1pm in time for you to grab some lunch.

Please be aware that the trip time also includes travel time with scenic views and commentary.
