11 Days Departs and Returns to Hobart

These hike themed expeditions combine an expedition voyage with hikes on some of Tasmania’s best coastal tracks. Guests will enjoy a variety of shore excursions, and less strenuous walks will be available at each destination. The imposing cliffs, sandy beaches and sapphire waters of the rugged coast of Tasmania offer an experience of spectacular beauty. These special departures combine an expedition voyage with coastal treks on some of Tasmania’s best walking tracks – a uniquely Australian back-to-nature experience. Guided by experienced bush-walkers, explore breath taking coastal hikes along with insights into the region’s unique eco-system.

Some of the hikes we aim to do on these expeditions include Cape Hauy (4hrs, Gr 3), Bishop & Clerk (7hrs Gr 4), Fluted Cape (2.5hrs Gr 3), Mt Beattie (3 hrs, Gr 2/3), and Wineglass Bay (1-2hrs, Gr 3). Learn more about each hike under the Itinerary section.

Note on fitness levels: This trip involves moderate to challenging walks, therefore reasonable mobility is required to enjoy all it has to offer. Our Xplorer tender permits easy boarding without climbing any stairs. Hikes vary in intensity and where possible we split groups to suit easy and moderate walkers. Guests are welcome to opt out of any excursion and relax onboard – our top deck outdoor lounge is great on a sunny day.  As the itinerary covers remote regions, it is not suitable for passengers with serious medical conditions.

Travel arrangements can change rapidly during this time. In the case of deferral or cancellation due to COVID-19 restrictions or impacts, guests will receive a 100% Future Cruise Credit to the value of monies paid.  Future Cruise Credit is long-dated and available for use on any available itinerary offered*. Embark: Board at Hobart’s Princes Wharf  at 4:00pm for 5:00pm departure.
Disembark: Arrive and disembark at Hobart’s Princes Wharf  at 08:00am.

Please arrive the day before departure and depart the day after the final day in case of changes to the schedule based on weather conditions.

  • 1 DEPART HOBART (D)

    Board your Coral Expeditions small ship at Hobart’s Princes Wharf at 4:00pm where there is time to settle into your stateroom before our 5:00pm departure. Take the time to become acquainted with all the facilities onboard before meeting your fellow travellers, the Captain and crew for the Captain’s Welcome Drinks.

  • 2 MT BEATTIE, PORT DAVEY (B, L, D)

    Mt Beattie is an easy to moderate walk located close to magnificent Port Davey. The raw and remote beauty of this wilderness area is enhanced by the breathtaking views over Bathurst Channel and Bathurst Harbour.

    Walk Details:
    › 3 hours return
    › Grade 2/3 walk – some bush-walking experience recommended. Tracks may have short steep hill sections, a rough surface, and many steps.
    › Prepare with: A raincoat, woollen jumper or polar-fleece jacket, sturdy walking shoes or boots, and a sun hat.

  • 3 CAPE HAUY, THREE CAPES (B, L, D)

    Cape Hauy (part of the Three Capes Walk) is a medium difficulty walk through an extraordinary landscape. Experience views of Fortescue Bay from Mt Fortescue and the dolerite columns at the tip of Cape Hauy.

    › 4 hours return (4.4 km one way)
    › Grade 3 walk – some bush-walking experience recommended. Tracks may have short steep hill sections, a rough surface, and many steps.
    › Some hazardous cliffs and unprotected track edges – supervise children
    › Prepare with: A raincoat, woollen jumper or polar-fleece jacket, sturdy walking shoes or boots, and a sun hat.

  • 4 FORTESCUE BAY TO WATERFALL BAY (B, L, D)

    The Fortescue Bay to Waterfall Bay trail is noted for providing an experience of some of the most magnificent coastline in Tasmania. The rainforest and blue gum stands and views of the Tasman Peninsula are nothing short of spectacular. At the end of this longer medium grade walk, the Coral Discoverer will be waiting for hikers to return.

    › Grade 3 walk – some bush-walking experience recommended. Tracks may have short steep hill sections, a rough surface, and many steps.
    › Some hazardous cliffs and unprotected track edges – supervise children
    › Prepare with: A raincoat, woollen jumper or polar-fleece jacket, sturdy walking shoes or boots, and a sun hat.

  • 5 FREYCINET NATIONAL PARK & WINEGLASS BAY (B, L, D)

    The spectacular peninsula of Freycinet is crafted from pink granite peaks – the Hazard mountains – surrounded by azure bays, and backed by dry eucalyptus forest. Enjoy a hike to the Wineglass Bay Lookout and later, join a beachcombers walk along Wineglass Bay, consistently voted one of the most breathtaking beaches in the world.

    › 2.5 hours return (3 km return)
    › Grade 3 walk – steep uphill climb one-way with rough bush steps to a beach lookout.
    › Prepare with: water bottle, sturdy walking shoes or boots, and a sun hat.

  • 6 BISHOP AND CLERK (B, L, D)

    Bishop and Clerk is a challenging walk located in the Maria Island National Park. Pass through diverse landscapes of grasslands and forest, to emerge overlooking a dramatic and sweeping view of the Southern Ocean.

    › 5 hours return (12 km return)
    › Grade 4 walk – bush-walking experience recommended. Tracks may be long, rough, and steep. Signage may be limited.
    › Supervise children, hazardous cliffs, unprotected track edges, rock screed scramble
    › Prepare with: A raincoat, woollen jumper or polar-fleece jacket, sturdy walking shoes or boots, and a sun hat.
    Other recommendations may include: Thermal pants, warm gloves, and woollen beanie.

  • 7 ARRIVE HOBART (B)

    Disembark in Hobart at 8:00am. A post-cruise transfer from the ship to Hobart city or airport is included.

The Captain and Team will make daily itinerary decisions to maximise the guest experience and take advantage of opportunities opened up by weather. There will be a daily briefing onboard to advise guests on the upcoming day’s activities.  The expedition will visit Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour conditions permitting. We always aim to visit these beautiful destinations, but if we are not able to enter, an alternative destination more appropriate to the weather conditions will be chosen by the Captain. Note the summer temperature can still be very cool especially with the wind chill so warm layered clothing is essential.

Accommodation Pick Up and Drop Off

Complimentary pick-up and drop-off at any Hobart or Launceston CBD Hotel, depending on which location tour starts and finishes. The pickup are usually between 8.30-9.15 am. The time of pickup will be confirmed closer to departure depending on where other guests are staying. Airport drop-off can be arranged in advance but will incur an airport drop-off fee of $60.

How many Guests will be on Tour

The largest group we take in a vehicle is 15 passengers. The vehicle you will travel in depends on passenger bookings. There are 3 different size vehicles. ‘Maximum Passengers’ policy is:

  • Hyundai iMax – Licensed to carry 8, no more than 5 passengers in this vehicle.
  • Toyota HiAce – Licensed to carry 14, no more than 11 passengers in this vehicle.
  • Yutong Coach – Half size coach bus. Licensed to carry 23, no more than 15 passengers in this vehicle.

 

Packing Suggestions

Generally, the weather over the tourist season is warm during the day and cool at night. It is recommended to pack a warm jacket for Tasmania regardless of the time of the year you are travelling.

  • Digital camera or camcorder
  • Walking shoes. Although most walking tracks are easy and established, good walking shoes will come in handy.
  • A pair of jeans or similar, a pair of shorts in summer.
  • Sunglasses, sun cream and a hat.
  • A small torch if you want to search wildlife at night at Cradle Mountain.
  • A raincoat or jacket

 

WiFi Access

Most of the accommodation offer free Wifi. It may be slower than you are used to due to the remote locations. Wifi may only available when close to the reception building.

 

Mobile or Cell Phone Coverage  

The only cell phone network that has reliable signal in most locations is TELSTRA network. Vodafone & Optus sim cards will usually have signal only in major cities or towns. Public phones are widely available, some have the option of payment on credit cards.

  • Are there concession discounts?
    Pensioners (Australia or New Zealand) and Seniors Card holders (Australia) save with our concession discounts on selected tours. Ask our friendly team which tours you can get a discount on.
  • Are your tours suitable for pensioners aged 76 and 84 ?
    Yes, Tasmania tours passengers range from children to adult who are 90 years of age.
  • Transfer By Public Bus In Tasmania
    There are two Public Bus companies that operate between Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and other places inside Tasmania. You can see these here: Redline Coach and Tassie Link. Redline Coach also does airport to hotel transfers.
  • Do you have any tours on offer during June, July or August ?
    Due to our off season of winter, no Tasmania tours operate during the months of June, July or August. The season starts in September and ends in May each year.
  • Is accommodation the night after the tour ends included in the price ?
    No, this accommodation will cost extra.
  • Is accommodation the night previous to the tour departure included in the price ?
    No, this Tasmania accommodation will be an extra cost.
  • Where is the meeting point for the start of tours ?
    The pick up is at the “before tour accommodation” hotel listed in the TRIP NOTES tabs of the specific tour you are looking at.
  • Do I need to arrive before Day 1 of my tour ?
    Please refer to your specific tour and look in the “Trip Notes” information where it may state this: You need to arrive any time the day prior to Day 1. If this is the case we can organise airport pick up and pre tour accommodation on your behalf, this will be an extra cost.

    Other tours start late in the day on Day 1 so you can arrive that morning which will avoid the extra nights accommodation cost.

  • How do you calculate the number of days for your Tasmania tour ?
    If you are doing a 4 day tour commencing on April 8th, the first day of the tour is and includes the 8th, plus 9th, plus 10th plus 11th and the tour ends on April 11.
  • Do your tours operate over Christmas and New Year?
    Yes – this is one of our most popular and busiest times
  • Are airfares from my home town included in the cost of the tours ?
    Airfares to and from Tasmania at the start and finish of your tours are extra.
  • Do you have short tours that include Bruny Island ?
    No tours include a trip to Bruny Island, however many people add this on as a day trip from Hobart either before or are after their multi day tour.
  • Does the price include The Spirit Of Tasmania ship fares ?
    The 11 Day Tour to Tasmania includes the Ship costs one way.
